“Kadie, I think it’s time we had the talk,” as I sat my daughter on our Goodwill-special sofa. She looked at me naively with big curious eyes as I settled on the ottoman across from her.

With a sigh, I put my hands together. “I’m going to talk to you about the birds and the bees.”
Kadie looked at me, threw up her hands and smiled.
“Birds and the bees?” I repeated and she smiled again. And she smiled each time I said, “Birds and the bees.”

Then her smile changed to a frown. Her diaper fulfilled its duty. And as I lifted her up and headed for the art-desk-turned-diaper-changing table, I told her that we’d talk about the birds and the bees later—some time ten to fourteen years later.
And she was fine with that.
