I’m surprised that I still get surprised that I enjoyed a Lovegood production more than I thought I would. My family didn’t have a positive initial impression of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, which I understand. However, the musical includes several fantastic song and dance numbers with humor and heart that aren’t wimpy at all.
I’m grateful for the reminder of what middle school can be like. With a son in middle school, it helped me consider how confusing and abrupt the season can be with change and growth.

My favorite moments include:
- Joshie’s “Animal Heart” that opened Act 2. It’s such a catchy song and an expectation subversion that a musical pop star would sing songs teaching youths good behavior.
- The Safety Patrol song. Mike, the lead vocalist, added so much energy to the number that I couldn’t help but smile throughout. My safety patrol days in elementary school missed out on his bravado.
- We took a Lovegood course “Acting the Song” and a classmate Tiffany joined this production. Her debut as Fregley’s Mom was unexpectedly hilarious, and her Joshie understudy performance showcased her dance skills.
- Speaking of Fregley, Eleanor also gave a believably funny performance to add a perfect mix of awkward and subtle humor.
