Chinese-American

We're a different breed. As we were walking through a park on our anniversary, Jenni smiled when she saw another couple that was an Asian male with a Caucasian female. I noticed them too and we were reminded that we’re a mixed race couple.

Our cultural differences don’t come up often except when we gather with our extended families. I’m often the only Asian in the room with Jenni’s family and Jenni is the only Caucasian when we gather with my family. Both of us are loved and accepted—never ostracized.

And, as a bonus, we both inherited more holidays to celebrate.

Just for fun, we looked at our heritage ingredients:

  • 1 cup Chinese
  • 1/4 cup English
  • 1/4 cup Finnish
  • 1/4 cup German
  • 1/4 cup mixture of Swedish, Dutch, Danish, and possibly Native American

I think the ingredients mixed quite well as our daughters are very cute.

Clearing the Cache

Mauritius, Réunion, and Paris

It was such a special trip to travel to where my father was born. I had heard about it in my youth, but never thought much about it, nor how my dad started there. It wasn’t until college, when my friends learned that my dad was born in Mauritius, that my family roots became interesting. From then on, my friends teased that I was part black since the island of Mauritius is 500 miles east of Madagascar, a larger island east of Africa.

Teamwork

Car seats are evilOne of the pillars of our marriage is teamwork. We have our differences in approaches and styles, but we always work together as a team—for life’s big projects and little tasks.

Crossing Bridges

Crossing a bridge, but not before celebrating with a kiss.

I believe one of the best benefits of being married is having your best friend bridge the seasons of life together.

Happily Six Years After

I mentioned on our last anniversary that we weren’t taking many photos of ourselves since having kids. I’m pleased to report that we have increased the frequency of photos for Jenni and me this year, especially since our a-photo-a-week project is themed around our married life.

I recently came back from a trip where there was a celebration of 60 years of marriage. 60 years! I certainly look forward to and hope that Jennilyn and I will share so many great years together. Even for six years, I cannot begin to count the blessings, grace, and love from God as He orchestrates in our lives.

Garage Band

Our uncommon overture with an accordion and trombone. Our album will be available someday.
We are both blessed with parents who love music. Though our instruments are not what you’d consider complementary, we can love each other in harmony.

Out Of The Mouths Of Babes

One recent morning when I wasn’t feeling well, Kadie said, “We could go to your room. You should do your exercises.”

He Brings Me Flowers

Flowers
David knows how much I enjoy flowers; especially when I’m in need of some cheer. But then the poor guy sneezes until he’s miserable. Love hurts, right? I think that after six years of marriage, I might have convinced him that I thoroughly enjoy them even when I set them outside the window. Nice thing is, they last quite a bit longer out in the cool air.

Live Life Anyways

Insomnia

David married me back when I wasn’t sure I would be able to be much of a wife to him. I was bed-ridden quite a bit and David carried a pillow around for me everywhere we went, and, occasionally, carried me when I couldn’t walk. Thankfully, I am WAY better than six years ago, but I am still dealing with my chronic pain, insomnia, and recently rediscovered, parasite issues. I thought they were gone, but I guess not.

Seriously

Playing with the iPad 2's photo booth at the Apple Store

Not taking life too seriously is a balance Jenni brings to our marriage. I tend to be all business and no play. I’ve learned to enjoy the journey and not focus solely on getting to a destination from Jenni.

We had a mini-date while my parents watched the kids and we struck a balance of getting some exercise walking around a mall and stopping by the Apple store so that I could check out the iPad 2 some more. While I’m fascinated by the Garage Band app, well, you call tell which app got Jenni’s imagination.
