Cannon Beach Sand Castles

We visited Cannon Beach to watch the annual sand castle contest. There were many very amusing creations, and a few that were fantastic. Of the twenty constructed, only a few were actual sand castles. Here are few that left us in awe or tickled our funny bone.

Angry Shark
Great expression of mischief.

Bi-Polar Bears
A twist of words and mix of humor.

Safe Harbor
This was my favorite because it reminded me of Helm’s Deep from Lord of the Rings. I was glad there was an actual “sand castle” at the sand castle contest. I admired the arcs and little details that textured the castle walls. Before Jenni and I left, we got to see what a tidal wave would do to a seaside castle.

Heard It Through the Grapevine
Wow. The most impressive sculpture on the beach drew in a large crowd. And rightfully so, with several skillful artists working on different sections to create the masterpiece.

Honorable Mention of a Creation 24 Years Ago
David, Jennilyn, Polly, Jim, Cory, KolebyWe were blessed to share the event with Jennilyn’s parents, her brother Cory, and his friend. Cory took some time away from surfing to celebrate his 24th birthday with all of us. And since we weren’t going to see Jenni’s dad tomorrow, we celebrated Father’s Day as well.

Build It, and They Will Destroy It
The sun came out and warmed all the people who came to see the finished creations. Jenni took a leisurely nap on the beach while I stood by and waited for the tide to come in. When the tide rolled in, Jenni and I watched the sand creations crumble or get washed away. We didn’t know why we enjoyed watching the destruction, but we did.

Our shadows closing in for a kissWe mused with the idea to get some friends together and try building some sand art ourselves. Perhaps, some time this summer, we’ll make another trek out to the beach ourselves, and try our hand at sand sculpting. I mean, I didn’t do much pumpkin carving before I got married, but that turned out pretty darn good.
