Will Work for Food
Jenni’s aunt Kathy gave us a $50 paper gift certificate for a food service that will cook and deliver a meal. It’s a very thoughtful gift for new parents since we spend so much time feeding, changing, entertaining, and enjoying Kadence that some of the routine chores, like cooking and cleaning, get neglected.
However, the gift certificate’s design looked a bit… how shall I say… unprofessional and lacking in design. At the risk of sounding like a snob, I would offer the suggestion to refrain from using 9 different font styles on one page.
Jenni and I visited their web site to see their menu. I chuckled listening to Jenni critique their web site design and layout.
Then the little voice inside my head reminded me that everyone has different talents and to not judge others based on their weakness. I have my own flaws too. And I’ve thought that instead of criticizing for someone’s weakness, I should lend a hand to help.
So I joked with Jenni that perhaps I could contact them and ask them if I could redesign their web site. And they could pay us with food. Then I could work from home and we wouldn’t have to cook. Sounds like a good idea eh?
An Old Haunt
I walked up to Jennilyn this morning for a hug and told her that I was looking forward to going to Fred Meyer with her and Kadence today.
“Visiting an old haunt?” She replied.
“Visiting an old honk?” I inquired.
“Haunt.”
Haunt? I suppose we’re getting close to Halloween, but I had never heard the expression ‘old haunt’ before. A quick search on dictionary.com revealed the definition Jenni referred to, number nine: Often, haunts. a place frequently visited: to return to one’s old haunts.
In looking back, the one-stop shopping Fred Meyer has been one of our old haunts. When Jenni and I courted, I would stop by the Fred Meyer in Battle Ground to pick up flowers, sweets, or a movie. On some occasions when Jenni had cabin fever, we’d make a date out of going to Fred Meyer.
After we married, one of our favorite date activities has been a one-two combo of Fred Meyer for Soy Delicious ice cream then Hollywood Videos for a movie.
So, yeah, visiting an old haunt. Learned something today.
Gain Some and Lose Some
Well, you’ll notice that our blog is a bit… emptier now.
I had been wanting to clean up our desktop computer (which is our blog server) since it was having problems rendering Jenni’s video projects. I thought I had taken all the necessary backup measures but I missed one. And it was a big one: our blog. I backed up all the graphics and templates, but forgot to backup the database which had all the content.
So now, I’m retracing through Google’s cache and an old backup I have from December 2006 to see what data I can recover.
Sigh. I was hoping for an easy Sunday afternoon.
But we’ll have some exciting video to show on our blog soon.
Happy Birthday Jenni!
We’ve got a big day today after last night’s late night party, we’re heading out to Jenni’s parents for their annual afternoon barbeque. We’ll be celebrating our baby shower, her dad’s retirement, and of course, Jennilyn’s birthday!
Powell’s Potter Party
It’s amazing that even a book launch could be an event. I guess the cynic in me says that our culture is caught up in the next big thing, but the optimist in me enjoys that people can celebrate everything and anything.
Shutterbugged
I feel like I’ve spent a ton of time behind my camera and post-processing on a computer all this week. Jenni and I worked on a photo job on Sunday and Tuesday, took photos at a going-away party on Friday, snapped shots at the Portland Swing Dance Club dance, and an engagement party today.
For the photo job, I ordered a new lens in preparations. I’m thankful to have a wife who encourages me to exercise the freedom (and the responsibility) with our finances and purchase a high-quality (and high price) lens. But the low-light shots I’m able to get now will pay for themselves in the long run.

No More School Debt
We did it. As the first step to buying our future home, we took the plunge and paid off all of Jenni’s remaining school loans. We were going to pay it off over the next year, but we’ve learned that it’s not how much we have that determines the house loan we can get, but how much we can pay out monthly. One more step closer to buying a house!

Shopping List on My Phone
We bought a big whiteboard from Costco for about $20. It was a great deal because it came with pens, an eraser, and it’s magnetic to boot.
We have three columns for stores we often frequent for shopping: WinCo, Freddies, and Costco. Whenever we think of something we need to buy, we just add on to the whiteboard. Ideally, I would use Outlook notes to do this, but Jenni and I find it easier to just write it on the whiteboard.
When it comes time to grocery shopping, I use the digital camera on my phone to take a snapshot of the list and reference it when we are shopping for groceries or household items.
My PDA Navigator
One of the best uses of the internet is getting directions. I’m glad that this technology came of age soon after I started driving. It’s very convenient and I can’t imagine finding places without it. MapQuest use to be the big one early on, and I use to print out directions through them. I would then fold them and tuck them away in the car after I reach my destination. I would have a collection of papers of directions to places, but unfortunately, I wouldn’t always label where they were to.
After I bought a PocketPC PDA, I used a better alternative, Yahoo Maps, to get directions. Then I would save the “Print-Friendly” version of the directions as a web page file on my PDA. The reason I use the “Print-Friendly” version is to remove all the ads and extra junk that’s on the web page.
Now I don’t have to print any directions, have the filename describe who I’m going to, and keep them saved on my PDA’s memory for future use.
